Home care 90/90 traction has proven to be safe and effective treatment
for lower back pain. With the knees and hips in 90-degree angles,
the patient's hips are cradled and rotated to flex the lumbar
curve. 90/90 lumbar traction uses positioning and the patients
own body to separate the vertebrae and relieve pressure off the
nerves and disc to help alleviate low back pain.
The patient lies down on a firm surface (the floor, therapy table or firm bed) with the legs on the bolster so their hips and knees are in 90 angles. Thus the name 90/90 traction. The patent wears a single pull pelvic belt that wraps around their hips and has a traction strap that goes up between the patients thighs and attaches to a rope pulley system. Once the patient is in position he gently pulls down on the handle and rope until the patient's hips are gently lifted off the surface. This flattens or reveres the lumbar curve and separates the vertebrae. The wedge is used to increase the amount of flexion that is being applied. At first the patient may use it only to rest their head on, but as their condition improves they may want to move the wedge down toward their waist to increase flexion.
The belt comes in 2 sizes Regular (30'-45") and Extra Large (46"-62").
